The First Encounter of the Drake crew with Miwok took
place at what is now Drake's Bay at the Point Reyes National
Seashore. Beginning in 1999 MLMT sponsored annual pageants at the
site. Our professional musicians and actors, together with Native
American performers and Middle School students, reenacted this
first meeting. The year was 1579 when Captain Drake found this
sheltered harbor at latitude 38 degrees north. There he landed to
repair and reprovision his ship, the Golden Hinde, before
undertaking circumnavigation of the globe back to England. Budget
cuts in 2008 forced the interruption of this event, which we hope
to revive for the pleasure of both students and visitors to the
Seashore.
Students studying this event used our Historic Voyage of Sir Francis Drake: Student Teacher Guide. Its illustrations, maps, music, costuming, and commentary can provide the basis for an in-class or assembly-based reenactment of the event. For more information:
Our Gold Rush materials can be
used as stand alone in the classroom, or additionally as the basis
for a student-created show. Unlike other
lesson plans and materials on the Gold Rush, our Gold Rush Student Workbook incorporates
first-person accounts, illustrations from the period, maps, social
practices, language arts, music, and math for a full-color
interdisciplinary module. Our Songbook and Teacher Guide
provide instructions on teaching songs of the day in the style of
the era. Creating a show provides the context for intensive
involvement in the period and is a great motivator for students of
all interests and backgrounds.
